in spite of 尽管
regardless of 不管……
because of 因为
in need of 需要
in spite of / regardless of:和despite同义,表示“不受其它因素的影响或制约”。
In spite of the case against nuclear energy above, nuclear energy programmes are expanding, which assumes a continual growth in industrial production and consumer demands.
Despite the growing use of phones, e-mail and instant messaging, in other words, Williams says studies show that we don't have as many friends as our parents.
the way + 从句(省略了in which或that)
I like the way she smiles.
There were several theories about the way in which the fire started.
There were several theories about the way that the fire started.
There were several theories about the way the fire started.
但是,the way之后用in which引导的定语从句最为正式;省略了that或in which是最自然、最常用的表达;然而,the way之后用that引导定语从句,最不常见。
注意,在先行词the way之后不用how。
This is the way how it happened.
This is the way how he always treats me.
Despite the progress that has been made in genetics and psychology, human intelligence has remained one of the most controversial areas of modern science.
The Great Wall of China is one of Beijing's biggest draws for tourists; despite its fame and ubiquity in postcards across the world, it rarely fails to attract tourists at the first proper sight.
但是,各位要关注的是另外那些加短语的“因为”,主要包括due to、owing to、as a result of这三个。
The way you are doing it is completely crazy.
The way she puts on that accent really irritates me.
The way she behaved towards him was utterly ruthless.
Words are important, but the way a person stands, folds his or her arms or moves his or her hands can also give us information about his or her feelings.
I hate the way she stared at me.
We like the way that her hair hangs down.
You could tell she was foreign by the way she was dressed.
She could not hide her amusement at the way he was dancing.
—How ______ he drive at a speed of 180km ph?
—It was surprising to us all, too.
A. might
B. must
C. should
D. would
